Understanding Plagiarism

Some of the most difficult and critical concepts all students need to understand in academic writing are what intellectual property is and what it means to give acknowledgment to the source of an idea. The skills needed to demonstrate this understanding - quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, and citing of sources - can be equally hard to master, and require direct, explicit, and repeated instruction. Use and citation of source material varies greatly across cultures, and many international students may have had little to no experience with an American university's expectations.

This section discusses how and why students plagiarize and what instructors can do to help students develop the skills they need to use source materials effectively.
